My mom told me a long time ago, back when I wanted to be an astronaut…‘You’re going to be an engineer.” And I was like, ‘Yeah whatever! Engineers are nerds.
I was 20 years old. I was going to community college paying for it myself and was also working. I slept two hours a night because I'm working full-time and then I have school full-time, and that drained me. I was looking for something else in the software industry. Lambda School came up on a Facebook ad and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll go for it.’
They said, ‘You don’t have to put any money down’, so I was like, ‘Sign me up.’ I was actually working at a mattress store. I was able to do my classes from there online. I used my phone as a hotspot ‘cause we didn’t have WiFi in there.
I have unlimited paid time off which I love. If I take two weeks off, it’s like, ‘Go ahead.’ And I have. I went to Canada just last month.
When I finally...visited my mom I was like, ‘I’m a software engineer. I’m actually making money now,’ and she’s like, ‘I knew you could do it. I can’t wait until you make more than me!’
